The UK is considering joining a new international investment bank designed to raise hundreds of millions of pounds to increase defense spending, amid rising tensions between NATO and Russia. According to a BBC report, Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey is exploring joining the "Defense, Security and Resilience Bank" (DSRB) established by Canada. Healey's proposal comes after his predecessor, Rachel Reeves, rejected the idea. Canada is leading efforts to establish the multinational bank, which aims to allow governments to obtain loans at lower costs to finance defense projects and expand military industries. So far, Albania, Bulgaria, Belgium, Greece, Latvia, Luxembourg, Romania, Turkey, and Ukraine have expressed support. The UK's joining, along with other G7 countries, is expected to require an initial investment of about £870 million, spread over three years. The UK Treasury emphasized that no decision has been made yet. The discussions are taking place as the UK seeks ways to finance its growing defense commitments. The government has so far avoided committing to raising defense spending to 3% of national income by 2030, but continues to adhere to the long-term target of 3.5% by 2035. The move also comes amid a series of incidents that have increased tensions on NATO's eastern flank, including the interception of a drone over Lithuania and an emergency flare incident near a Danish helicopter in the Baltic Sea. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, visiting the UK, is expected to declare that the alliance "will not be deterred by Russia's campaign of hostile actions."
