After the High Court ruling, Deri clarifies: "We will return power to the people and its elected officials"

Shas chairman Aryeh Deri harshly criticized the High Court's decision to reject his party's petition against the prevention of the state memorial conference for Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. Deri accused the judges of insensitivity and detachment from public sentiment, and declared that the decision strengthens his resolve to reform the judicial system and return power to the people and their elected representatives.

Shas chairman, MK Aryeh Deri, harshly criticized the High Court's decision to reject his party's petition against the prevention of the state memorial conference for the late Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. Following the ruling, the conference will not take place. Deri stated: "The heart aches. A million people marched behind the bier of our master Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, a million people, from all communities and circles, who wept for their rabbi and teacher, and today the High Court judges, with insensitivity and detachment from the feelings of multitudes of Jews, facilitate the prevention of the state memorial conference for his legacy." He argued that the decision goes beyond harming Shas and harms a vast traditional and religious public. Deri linked the ruling to his party's struggle against the judicial system and declared: "This decision only strengthens our resolve to fundamentally reform the judicial system and return power to the people and its elected officials." Earlier, the High Court judges rejected the petition. During the hearing, the party's attorney, Guy Bussi, argued that the Attorney General "did everything to put spokes in the wheels" and that this constitutes "deliberate and systematic harassment of the religious public."
