Trump confirmed last month that he plans to meet with Kim later this year, noting that Pyongyang has 57 "very powerful" nuclear weapons—a figure contradicting intelligence estimates in Seoul of 80 to 120 warheads. However, North Korea has not yet officially responded to American overtures. Hours before Lee's speech, Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of the North Korean leader, attacked the US over military exercises and warned of a harsh response. She said that "only idiots would think North Korea will ever give up its nuclear weapons." The annual joint US-South Korea military exercise was reduced by Trump as a goodwill gesture, but Pyongyang demands broader strategic concessions.
