According to the IRGC commander, the tanker attempted to pass through the strait "illegally" and caught fire after the strike. He also claimed that the vessel was traveling along the route "with the support" of the United States. Ship traffic through the strait has noticeably decreased: on September 17, only four cargo ships passed through, compared to an average of about 16 over the previous ten days.
