A container ship operating in the service of the Israeli shipping company Zim was attacked yesterday (Wednesday) in the Black Sea off the coast of Bulgaria by three maritime drones, severely damaged, and sank during the night. All 18 crew members were rescued safely by the Bulgarian Navy. The ship, CONTSHIP JET, sailing under the Liberian flag and managed by a Greek shipping company, departed from the Gulf Port in Haifa en route to the port of Constanta in Romania, after also calling at Ashdod. On board were 421 containers containing lithium-ion batteries, flammable liquids, acids, and chemical materials, along with food products and construction materials. Some containers fell into the sea. The attack occurred around 12:00, about 17 nautical miles east of Cape Kaliakra, within Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone. The impacts were recorded by the Bulgarian Navy's surveillance systems and a French maritime patrol aircraft. Meanwhile, the defense ministers of Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey convened in Sofia for an emergency discussion on Black Sea shipping security and condemned the attacks. The identity of the attackers has not yet been clarified; Ukraine accused Russia, and Moscow denied involvement.
