Thousands of reports and hundreds of confiscations - but the "Wild West" still rules in Tel Aviv

The Tel Aviv Municipality presented record enforcement data against electric two-wheelers: 643 confiscations and 7,667 reports in August. Despite this, residents and riders report dangerous riding on roads and sidewalks. The municipality demands additional powers from the Ministry of Transportation.

The Tel Aviv Municipality presented record enforcement data against electric two-wheelers in August 2026: 643 confiscations and 7,667 reports. This is a significant increase compared to previous months (520 confiscations and 4,450 reports in June, 484 confiscations and 6,040 reports in July). Enforcement is carried out by the Municipal Supervision Division in cooperation with the Urban Security and Policing Patrol (SAL"A) and the City Beautification Unit (SHAP"A). The municipality required sharing companies to install identification plates for enforcement against illegal riding. Despite the efforts, residents and riders testify to a feeling of "Wild West" on the roads: riding against traffic, through red lights, on sidewalks, without helmets, and in large numbers. Itai, an electric bicycle rider in Tel Aviv, calls for increased police presence in the field instead of automatic cameras. Haim, a driver, describes fear of riding against traffic in a one-way lane. Deputy Mayor Lahavi demands additional enforcement powers from the Ministry of Transportation on roads and intersections, warning that every day of delay brings closer the next accident. The municipality has completed paving about 200 km of bike paths, but enforcement of their use is insufficient according to riders.
