Gilboa road rage killer sentenced to 22 years in prison
The District Court sentenced a defendant convicted of reckless murder to 22 years in prison following a road rage incident in the Gilboa region. The defendant, under the influence of drugs and alcohol and disqualified from driving, shot the victim Diyar Omari after a scuffle, fled the scene, and later returned with his sister in an attempt to obstruct the investigation. Compensation of 258,000 NIS was awarded to the family.
The District Court today sentenced a defendant convicted of reckless murder to 22 years in prison, after a road rage incident in the Gilboa region ended in the death of Diyar Omari. The defendant, under the influence of drugs and alcohol and disqualified from driving, became involved in a confrontation with the victim over his driving style. After an exchange of words, the defendant fired shots into the air, and during a scuffle that ensued, fired two bullets that hit the victim, one of which was fatal. The victim fled to his car, and the defendant fired three additional shots at him that missed. After the victim fell on the road, the defendant fled the scene without calling for help. Later, he returned with his sister and asked her to lie to the police that she was driving, in an attempt to obstruct the investigation. The court ruled that his actions demonstrated a lack of restraint and exceptional severity, and rejected the self-defense claim. The sentencing range was set between 20 and 25 years, and the defendant was sentenced to 22 years in prison, compensation of 258,000 NIS to the family, and a three-year license suspension. The court considered his lack of criminal record and the period of detention, but gave weight to the severity of the acts, lack of remorse, and the risk posed by the defendant.
