The court ordered the release to house arrest of four suspects in the operation of the sewage tunnel exposed near Jerusalem, despite opposition from security officials. Police and Shin Bet warned that activity along the underground route, used to smuggle illegal residents into Israeli territory, poses a real security threat and could facilitate a deadly attack. The tunnel was discovered on October 26 during an operational activity by the Jerusalem Envelope Border Police and the IDF near the village of A-Ram. The entrance was concealed using a commercial vehicle. During the raid, 32 illegal residents who had crossed through the shaft into Israeli territory were located. The release comes against the backdrop of a suspicion raised by the Shin Bet that the route was also used to smuggle a suspect in planning an attack who was arrested on October 20.
