Rebellion from within: Mamdani's ally has become his biggest headache
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's left-wing alliances are crumbling: socialist candidate Darilyza Avila Chevalier, who won his endorsement, led a sharp attack demanding the dismissal of Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch following an incident where ICE agents shot an undocumented immigrant in the Bronx. The crisis exposes tensions over sanctuary city policies and the political rift within the leftist camp.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's left-wing alliances have begun to publicly unravel. Darilyza Avila Chevalier, a socialist congressional candidate who won his personal endorsement in the primaries, led a vocal protest campaign that included a clear demand to fire Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and disband the special response unit. The confrontation erupted after an incident where ICE agents shot an undocumented immigrant in the Bronx, highlighting tensions over sanctuary city policies. Chevalier accused the police of violating city policy and attempting to serve the interests of the Trump administration. Mayor's office staff called the move "a stab in the back." The crisis reveals an explosive dynamic: Chevalier won the June primary after ousting incumbent Representative Adriano Espaillat, a feat that required Mamdani's personal support. Since the district is overwhelmingly Democratic, her victory almost certainly ensures her election to Congress. Chevalier was joined in her calls by Iyafa Siritupak, a state Senate candidate who also received Mamdani's endorsement. In contrast, two other candidates he supported, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez, refrained from joining. The mayor's office has labeled Chevalier a "ticking time bomb" who already constitutes a heavy political burden.
