Not only intelligence – what mathematical ability depends on
Researchers from Texas A&M University found that success in mathematics depends not only on knowing formulas, but also on language skills, flexible thinking and understanding of numbers. An analysis of 122 tests showed that the key factors are language comprehension and the ability to find patterns. The authors emphasize that mathematical abilities can be developed through practice, and recommend that educators analyze the nature of students' mistakes.
Researchers from Texas A&M University found that success in mathematics depends not only on knowing formulas and rules. An analysis of 122 different test batteries showed that the key factors are language skills, flexible thinking and the ability to find connections between numbers. The head of the study, associate professor Daniel Gayovsky, noted that language comprehension is not just vocabulary, but the ability to perceive information and formulate conclusions. Flexible thinking allows one to find patterns and solve unfamiliar problems. At the same time, developed cognitive abilities do not guarantee success without a basic understanding of numbers. The authors emphasize that mathematical abilities can be developed through regular practice, and recommend that educators analyze the nature of students' mistakes in order to identify specific problems: misunderstanding of concepts, difficulties with text, or slowness.
