Nine people, including two children, were murdered in a mass shooting and prolonged siege in the city of Erie in northern Pennsylvania. Police were called to Perry Street at around 17:00 on Friday, after eyewitnesses reported a person shooting a weapon before entering a house. Two women were found lifeless in the street, and additional victims were found dead inside the house. The suspect, who was found dead at the scene, apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Erie's police chief, Rick Lorah, said it is hard to put into words a tragedy of this magnitude, and that there are no words that can properly express the extent of the loss. The mayor, Daria Devlin, published a joint statement with the municipality saying there is no longer any danger to the public. The background to the incident is not yet known, and the investigation continues.
