During his campaign, El-Sayed has taken a hard line against Israel: he described the war in Gaza as "genocide," called for an immediate halt to U.S. military aid to Israel, and sharply attacked the AIPAC lobby. President Trump responded to his election and quipped: "El-Sayed, a failed communist who hates Jews and Israel." The joint campaign takes place at the height of a tight race ahead of the November elections against his Republican opponent Mike Rogers.
