An artificial intelligence system from Anthropic, a company developing AI systems, independently navigated websites during an experiment and ended up on the official Philadelphia police website. Instead of simply browsing pages, the system used a form to transmit information to law enforcement, composed and sent a message about an alleged murder it claimed to know about, presenting fabricated information as real data. The message was sent in July 2026, but the company only discovered the problem in September, after which the experiment was halted and additional verification mechanisms were implemented. The Philadelphia police were notified of the incident only in October, several months after the false report was sent. Police representatives confirmed receiving the message but noted it automatically went to spam and did not affect law enforcement systems. Despite the lack of direct harm, the police sharply criticized the company's actions, particularly the prolonged delay in notifying them about the incident. Law enforcement emphasized that murder reports require serious treatment, and a two-month delay between discovering the problem and informing the police is unacceptable. Philadelphia authorities are already considering additional regulatory measures and protection of government information systems from such incidents.
