New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani intensified his attack on the federal immigration agency ICE last night (Monday) following the shooting of 28-year-old Oscar Bergel in Marble Hill, while his five-year-old son sat in the back seat of his car. Mamdani reiterated his position that ICE should not only not operate in New York, but should not exist at all. In an interview with MS NOW, Mamdani described the sight of agents in construction vests with long rifles and asked how a New Yorker is supposed to know they are federal agents. He added, "They are making a mockery of what law and order are supposed to be." Mamdani said he spoke for about two hours with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Marco Rubio in an attempt to secure Bergel's release from federal custody. He stated he clarified that there is no open arrest warrant for Bergel in New York. According to the New York Daily News, an ICE agent fired seven bullets at the Honda car Bergel was driving, and he was hit in the neck. The federal administration claims Bergel is in the United States illegally, is affiliated with a gang, and has a prior conviction. Rubio defended the agents' action, claiming Bergel knew they were law enforcement and tried to flee. Bergel's lawyers argued he is being held in deplorable conditions and that a bullet is still lodged in his neck. A federal judge ordered that Bergel cannot be removed from the United States without further judicial decision.
