Whoever doesn't study will be drafted? Senior rabbi's recordings reveal: Shas changed course right before the elections

Recordings of Rabbi Moshe Tzedaka reveal that Shas changed its stance on the conscription of Haredim right before the elections. The rabbi planned to publish a letter against the party but was persuaded not to do so.

Recordings of the Haredi-Sephardic Rabbi Moshe Tzedaka, published this evening (Sunday) on the Kan News broadcast, reveal that the Shas party changed its stance on the conscription of Haredim right before the elections. During the campaign, the party's central line was "whoever doesn't study - should be drafted," but in internal recordings, Rabbi Tzedaka is heard saying: "They backtracked." According to him, before Shas reversed its position, he planned to publish a letter calling not to vote for the party. Senior rabbis of the movement came to his home on Saturday night to persuade him not to publish the letter, and he was convinced. In the recordings, the rabbi was asked whether to vote for Shas, and he replied that it depends on the change in stance. Earlier this month, MK Yinon Azulai from Shas said in an interview that the party supports drafting those who do not study, and proposed economic and criminal sanctions that were rejected by the coalition.
