Umm al-Fahm: Muhammad Khalifa demolishes his own home after spending 600,000 shekels

A young man from Umm al-Fahm demolishes his own home after spending more than 600,000 shekels on its construction, following a demolition order on grounds of building without a permit, in a scene reflecting the planning and housing crisis in Arab towns.

A young man from the city of Umm al-Fahm, Muhammad Jamal Ibrahim Khalifa, demolished his own home in the Suweisa neighborhood after receiving a notice from the Israeli authorities ordering its demolition on grounds of building without a permit. Khalifa was preparing to move into his home ahead of his marriage and the start of a new life, before finding himself forced to demolish it with his own hands to avoid demolition by authorities' machinery and the resulting fines and additional financial costs. This incident comes amid a rising phenomenon of self-demolition in Umm al-Fahm, Wadi Ara towns, and Arab towns in general, where homeowners facing demolition orders are compelled to carry out the orders themselves under pressure of deadlines, fines, and demolition costs. Information indicated that more than 260 homes and structures were threatened with demolition in the area at the time, and that planning and building committees issued demolition orders against 253 homes and structures in Wadi Ara towns, including 119 orders in Umm al-Fahm.
