British Labour MP Tahir Ali sparked controversy yesterday (Tuesday) during a parliamentary debate on sanctions against Israel, after calling for "military action" against the state. Ali interrupted a Liberal Democrat MP who argued that disarming Hamas is a necessary condition, asking whether Israel should also be disarmed given its "atrocities." This is not the first time Ali has demanded the deployment of the British military against Israel; last July, he called for sending British soldiers to protect Palestinians from the IDF's "genocide." During the debate, other MPs called for a full arms embargo on Israel. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband harshly criticized Israel and accused the government of turning a blind eye to "ethnic cleansing" in Judea and Samaria. Conversely, some MPs questioned the timing of the announcement close to the Israeli elections, and Jewish MP Matthew Patrick raised concerns about exploiting the conflict for antisemitic attacks, recalling the attack on the Heyton Park synagogue on Yom Kippur.
