Earlier, in July, Mamdani called on residents to demonstrate against the Israeli premier's visit. "If someone feels disappointment or opposition, protest is something that always commands respect," the mayor said then. According to city officials, Mamdani's decision to step away from the protest is related to his desire to avoid deepening the rift with the city's Jewish community, as well as security complexities on the part of the New York police.
