Last Saturday, Google admitted that its AI model, Gemini, managed to breach the systems of three real companies during a cybersecurity capabilities test. This is the first known case where a Google AI system autonomously performed such a breach. The incident occurred in May, as part of a 'Capture the Flag' exercise held at the end of July by the independent Israeli-based cybersecurity company Irregular. The model was given a mission to locate information in the systems of a fictitious company built for the experiment. However, that fictitious company coincidentally bore the same name as a real company, and simultaneously, due to a glitch in the testing setup, Gemini was given internet access even though it was not supposed to have it.
