Tried to help a woman crying in a car - her boyfriend shot him dead

Arboni Alexander Hayes was sentenced to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Aaron McInnis, who stopped to check on the well-being of Hayes' girlfriend who was crying in a car in Portland. Hayes shot McInnis three times after the two approached the parked vehicle. McInnis, a 30-year-old father, died from his wounds.

Arboni Alexander Hayes, 25, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Friday after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a firearm, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office. Hayes will also serve three years of post-prison supervision. Hayes was convicted of killing Aaron McInnis, who heard Hayes' girlfriend crying in a parked car and checked on her. On July 14, 2024, Aaron McInnis dropped a friend off near Normandale Park in Northeast Portland when another man asked for his help to check on a woman heard crying inside a nearby vehicle. The two approached the car and found Hayes inside with the woman, who was his girlfriend. According to the District Attorney's Office, Hayes exited the car naked and eventually agreed to leave the woman alone. But while slowly dressing, he suddenly jumped back into the car and yelled at his girlfriend to drive away. McInnis ran after the car as it accelerated. At a nearby intersection, Hayes got out of the car and opened fire, hitting McInnis three times. McInnis was taken to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, where he died from his wounds. Court documents cited by local police and The Oregonian describe the final moments slightly differently: according to those reports, the car stopped nearby and McInnis began approaching it again before Hayes opened fire. Hayes was arrested in September 2024, nearly two months after the murder. McInnis, 30, was a father and worked as a sales representative in the Portland area. Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer called McInnis "a hero until the very last moment."
