Lebanese internal security forces stopped a Dodge Caravan vehicle at the Dahr al-Baydar checkpoint over the weekend, on the strategic axis connecting Beirut to the Bekaa Valley. A search of the vehicle revealed 250 kilograms of TNT and another 250 kilograms of C-4, totaling half a ton of explosives. Two Hezbollah operatives in the vehicle were transferred for questioning by the military police of the Lebanese Army. The cargo, which also included nails and metal pellets designed to increase shrapnel lethality, was en route to the Dahieh suburb of Beirut, where it was to be handed over to a person known as "Dhu al-Faqar." Various Lebanese reports provided conflicting data: MTV network reported about 780 kilograms, including 216 kilograms of C-4, 281 kilograms of Tetryl, and nails and small charges. The newspaper "An-Nahar" reported that the investigation is examining the possibility that the cargo was intended for an assassination operation. Lebanese Justice Minister Adel Nassar promised that the investigation would be completed to the end, emphasizing that the dismantling of illegal weapons is an irreversible path. The affair occurs against the backdrop of the Lebanese government's efforts to limit Hezbollah's independent security activities.
