Lithuania's Ministry of Defense announced that the unit will arrive at the end of October and will stay in the country for nine months. It will include an engineering battalion. One of the tasks of the American military will be border protection. The current rotation follows a reduction in the US military presence in the region: about 1,000 troops left Lithuania in June, and a new unit did not arrive immediately. As a result, for the first time since 2020, no American armored battalion remained in the country. Lithuania's president thanked US President Donald Trump for the decision. US Army Europe officials said the new deployment is part of a pre-planned rotation announced in August. Lithuania's strategic importance is linked to its border with Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad region, as well as the Suwałki Gap—the only land route connecting the Baltic states to the rest of NATO territory. Lithuania is simultaneously forming its own national division and, together with Latvia and Estonia, strengthening eastern borders as part of the Baltic Defense Line project.
