The "polite thief" from Japan: Stole a watch worth $290,000 - and returned it by mail with an apology note
A man entered a luxury watch store in Tokyo, asked to try on an Audemars Piguet watch worth $292,000 - and fled with it. Three days later, employees were surprised to receive a package containing the stolen watch and a handwritten apology note. Police are still searching for the mysterious thief.
A man entered a luxury watch store in the Nakano Broadway complex in Tokyo last Thursday, asked to try on an Audemars Piguet watch worth about 46 million yen (approximately $292,000) - and fled with it. Three days later, on Sunday, a package arrived at the store containing the stolen watch and a handwritten apology note. The package was sent from Aichi Prefecture in central Japan, but the sender's details turned out to be fake. Police are still searching for the suspect. The complex was the target of another watch theft in August, when four watches worth 200 million yen were stolen.
