The Palestinian Authority points a finger at Trump: this is the excuse for postponing the elections
The Palestinian Authority is expected to postpone the general elections to September 2027, pointing an accusing finger at the Trump administration. An internal document claims that American promises to prevent annexation, reduce settler violence and release Palestinian funds were not fulfilled. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar attacked Abu Mazen and accused him of misleading the international community.
The Palestinian Authority is expected to postpone the general elections for the presidency and the legislative council to September 2027, while pointing an accusing finger at the Trump administration. An internal document prepared for Palestinian officials claims that American promises to prevent further annexation steps in Judea and Samaria and East Jerusalem, to reduce settler violence and to release Palestinian funds amounting to close to seven billion dollars were not fulfilled. The document states that conditions have deteriorated throughout the Palestinian territory. The recommendation is that Abu Mazen issue a presidential decree setting a new date for the elections in the first half of September 2027, while continuing dialogue between the factions. This is a change compared with Abu Mazen's commitment in his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 24, when he declared that he intended to hold the elections on time. The Palestinians have not held general elections since 2005 and 2006. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar attacked Abu Mazen and accused him of misleading the international community. The decision is not entirely surprising, since in recent weeks significant doubts were raised regarding the ability to hold the vote at the end of November. Within Fatah disagreements have emerged, as some senior members of the movement demanded to first open a dialogue with Hamas.
