Earlier this week (Sunday), Amedspor defeated Beşiktaş 3-2 at home in Diyarbakır, with the second goal scored by Israeli midfielder Dia Saba, in his second season with the club. The success of the team from Diyarbakır, the city considered the unofficial capital of the Kurds in Turkey, is generating excitement among Kurds across the Middle East. The team's good run comes precisely at a time when the dream of Kurdish autonomy is fading. In Turkey, the Kurdish underground PKK has agreed to disarm, and in Syria, Rojava, the autonomous Kurdish entity in the north of the country, is dissolving and integrating into the government of President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Many of the club's fans also support the PKK, and in the absence of a Kurdish state, Amedspor has become, in many eyes, the team representing 'imaginary Kurdistan'. Despite the Kurdish identity of the club, there are no signs that Erdoğan intends to act against it, as he seeks the support of Kurdish parties to extend his term.
