The battle against restoring the medical license of a gynecologist convicted of sex offenses

The Women's Lobby and the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel have appealed to the Supreme Court against the decision to restore the medical license of gynecologist Dr. Benny Shachter, who was convicted of sex offenses against patients. The petition was filed after the Jerusalem District Court rejected it in August, ruling that the organizations lack standing to appeal. They now await the Supreme Court's decision on whether to hear the case.

The Women's Lobby and the Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel have filed a request for leave to appeal with the Supreme Court, challenging the rejection of their petition against the decision to restore the medical license of gynecologist Dr. Benny Shachter, who was convicted of sex offenses against patients. The petition follows a decision by retired Judge Strashnov, under which Shachter would return to treating women in about a year and a half. In August, the Jerusalem District Court dismissed the petition. Judge Nimrod Fleks ruled that under the Physicians Ordinance, the organizations have no right to appeal the decision. They now await the Supreme Court's decision on whether to hear the request. Attorney Hila Neubach argues that the District Court's interpretation harms the public interest. Tal Hochman, CEO of the Women's Lobby, stated they will not stop acting until Shachter's license is permanently suspended, noting he is a sex offender who committed offenses against patients and served prison time.
