Tel Aviv U transforms memorial stickers into Oct. 7 monument

Tel Aviv University has unveiled 'Engraved Voices,' a new memorial that transforms the ubiquitous memorial stickers seen across Israel since October 7, 2023 into a permanent monument. The low steel wall is etched with 500 phrases taken from stickers plastered on benches, lampposts, and bus stations, each representing a person killed on October 7 or a soldier who fell in subsequent campaigns.

Tel Aviv University has unveiled a new memorial called 'Engraved Voices' that transforms the ubiquitous memorial stickers seen across Israel since October 7, 2023 into a permanent monument. The low steel wall is etched with 500 phrases taken from stickers that have been plastered on benches, lampposts, and bus stations, each representing a person killed on October 7 or a soldier who fell in subsequent campaigns. The monument is an open space on the campus pedestrian sidewalk network, near the Gilman Building. It was designed by architect Lihi Ein Gedi Davidovitz, an alumna and lecturer at the university, whose proposal was selected from 147 submissions in an open design competition. Davidovitz said she was deeply moved by the phenomenon of memorial stickers, noting that many phrases were about life, love, friendship, courage, joy and hope rather than death or mourning. A digital archive of approximately 1,000 memorial stickers accompanies the physical monument, allowing visitors to discover the stories behind the phrases.
