Ben Hissin, a Canadian-Israeli Jew of Kurdish origin, was released today (Wednesday) from prison in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq after 11 years of imprisonment. Hissin escaped the death sentence after his punishment was removed following a reconciliation achieved last year with the victim's family. Hissin was imprisoned due to his involvement in a conflict that led to the death of a local man. His release was made possible after funds were raised to conduct the reconciliation. International efforts for his release were led by attorney Alan Lawy and a team of ultra-Orthodox businessmen from the United States. Hissin also thanked Eyal Siso, a former senior official in the Foreign Ministry, who assisted in his release. Hissin is expected to arrive in Israel in the coming days.
