An investigation by ProPublica, also reported by the New York Times, revealed that Omar Karmelov, president of the International Boxing Association and a Russian businessman close to the Kremlin, funded a private island and fireworks display for the wedding celebrations of Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of the US president. The event took place in the Bahamas earlier this year. According to the report, this constitutes a blatant violation of accepted ethical norms for the family of a sitting American president, as the president's family is expected to avoid accepting expensive gifts from foreign entities known for attempting to advance geopolitical agendas. Trump Jr. and his new wife Bettina issued a statement on Instagram confirming receipt of the gifts but claimed the trip to the island was intended as a weekend with friends after the wedding, a distinction ethics experts consider meaningless. President Trump himself did not attend the event, and the White House stated he has no idea who Karmelov is. It is unclear how Trump Jr. and his wife met Karmelov; a spokesperson for him noted they met through a mutual friend, sharing a fondness for boxing and hunting. The boxing association headed by Karmelov has ties to Gazprom, the Russian state gas company, and Karmelov himself has direct ties to Russian President Putin, who awarded him the 'Order of Friendship' last April. Ethics experts emphasize that while accepting the gift is not illegal, it raises concerns about future influence and indicates a disregard for public perception.
