The Asian Football Confederation postponed the 2027 Asian Cup to early 2028, against the backdrop of security tensions in the Gulf region and the accompanying logistical complications and travel disruptions. The confederation issued a statement on Tuesday explaining that it decided to postpone the tournament, which was scheduled to start on January 7 and continue until December 23, 2027, following intensive consultations with the organizing authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The confederation stated in its announcement that the organizing committee "agreed to reschedule the premier national team tournament, given the current exceptional circumstances resulting from developments in the region, and the resulting major logistical complications and travel disruptions." The statement added that the exceptional circumstances made postponing the tournament necessary to safeguard the interests of all participating teams, officials, and fans. The confederation affirmed its continued work with the local organizing committee and member national associations to minimize the impact of the postponement.
