Poll in France: Nearly half of Muslims would consider leaving — if Marine Le Pen is elected president
A poll published in 'Le Figaro' reveals that 46% of Muslims in France would consider leaving the country if Marine Le Pen is elected president. On the other hand, 44% of French Jews see the rise of the far left as a possible reason for leaving. The poll points to growing fear of attacks and discrimination against religious people, especially among Muslims.
A poll published in the French newspaper 'Le Figaro' reveals worrying data about social tensions in France. According to the poll, 46% of Muslims in France would consider leaving the country if the far-right leader, Marine Le Pen, is elected president in the upcoming elections to be held in about half a year. On the other hand, 44% of French Jews see the rise of the far-left party to power as a potential reason for their departure. Earlier this month, the head of the French employers' association, Patrick Martin, declared that he would leave France if Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who heads the far-left party, wins. The poll also found that two-thirds of French residents fear a rise in attacks and discrimination against religious people, a figure that jumped to 80% among Muslims. This fear leads 27% of Muslims to want to restrict the wearing of visible religious symbols in public spaces, such as the hijab. Likewise, 41% of French people see civil disobedience as a legitimate form of action, and 75% of Mélenchon's voters are prepared to refuse to obey laws they see as unjust. Against the background of rising energy prices and student protests, 38% of French people would consider taking part in a general strike if Le Pen wins.
