Pillay decries US sanctions on ICC, where she is ‘confident’ Netanyahu will one day stand trial

Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay criticizes US sanctions on the ICC as illegal, calls on Trump to learn international law, and expresses confidence that Prime Minister Netanyahu will eventually stand trial at the court.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay criticized Donald Trump's sanctions against the International Criminal Court as "illegal" in an AFP interview, saying the US president needs a lesson in international law. Pillay, 85, said the sanctions were announced hours after her Nobel as a "reaction to the fact that the award was not given to President Trump." She expressed confidence that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will one day stand trial at the ICC, despite acknowledging little political appetite to arrest him. Pillay also addressed Israeli officials' outrage over her Nobel, after she headed the UN commission that found genocide in Gaza. Netanyahu called her a "bigot" while the Foreign Ministry compared her to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels. Pillay noted previous US administrations welcomed an ICC warrant against Putin, calling it "double standards." She said she was still digesting the Nobel win and hinted some of the $1.2 million prize might be invested in her native South Africa.
