Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar congratulated Paraguay's new President Pedro Alliana on his inauguration, two days after the Senate impeached President Santiago Peña following the collapse of Ueno Bank. Sa'ar posted on his X account, stating that Israel is committed to strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. Alliana responded that the historic ties between Paraguay and Israel reinforce his commitment to continue working together based on shared values. Alliana visited Israel in early October at the invitation of the government, met with Sa'ar and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and expressed a desire to maintain the embassy in Jerusalem. In an interview with the Jerusalem Post, he said that Paraguay is building a strategic alliance with Israel, supports its right to defend its territory, and maintains intelligence cooperation with Israel and the US to curb Iranian activity on the continent. The change in leadership came after Peña submitted a resignation that was not accepted, and all 44 senators voted in favor of his impeachment. Alliana was sworn in that same evening and will serve until August 2028.
