New hand luggage rules and fines from Lufthansa – do they affect Israel
The Lufthansa Group is introducing a strict low-cost Economy Basic fare on European routes. From October 6, tickets went on sale that include only compact hand luggage measuring 40×30×15 cm. Carrying a standard suitcase (up to 8 kg) is charged separately — from 15 euros, and attempting to bring it without payment risks a fine of 60–110 euros. Flights to Israel are not subject to the new rules.
The Lufthansa Group is shifting most European routes to a strict low-cost model. From Tuesday, October 6, tickets under the minimum Economy Basic fare became available for sale, and will be valid for flights starting October 27. The new price category offers Spartan conditions: the fare includes only one compact piece of hand luggage measuring up to 40×30×15 cm, which must fit under the seat in front. Carrying a suitcase in the cabin or checking luggage is completely excluded, as is advance seat selection; tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. Passengers wishing to take a standard cabin suitcase (up to 8 kg, 55×40×23 cm) can purchase the option from 15 euros. Attempting to bring an unpaid suitcase to the boarding gate will result in forced check-in and a fine of 60 to 110 euros. The innovation covers seven group carriers: Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Discover Airlines, and Lufthansa City Airlines. The fare's geography includes short- and medium-haul flights within Europe, as well as to Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Flights to Israel are not included in this list, and the scheme does not affect connecting routes with an intercontinental segment. Passengers with elite statuses HON Circle, Senator, and Star Alliance Gold may in some cases carry an 8 kg suitcase for free even on the basic fare. A test launch of the format took place in May, covering over 300 routes.
