The 'Retainer Sacrifice' Hypothesis in Ancient Egypt.. Mysterious Injuries in 5,000-Year-Old Skulls
A recent study reexamines the 'retainer sacrifice' hypothesis in ancient Egypt, after revealing signs of injuries on skulls of individuals buried alongside rulers from the First Dynasty. Researcher Rosalind Campbell examined 46 skulls and noted injuries in 18 of them, including linear fractures and sharp-force wounds, suggesting some may have suffered fatal violence near the time of death, but the study does not provide conclusive evidence.
A recent study reexamines one of the most controversial hypotheses regarding burial rituals in ancient Egypt, after revealing signs of injuries on skulls of individuals buried alongside rulers from the First Dynasty, suggesting some may have suffered fatal violence near the time of death. The study examined human remains found in subsidiary graves surrounding royal funerary complexes at Umm el-Qa'ab in the Abydos region, dating back to approximately 3078-2900 BCE. Researcher Rosalind Campbell, from Purdue University, examined 46 skulls preserved in the Duckworth Collection at the University of Cambridge, and noted indicators of injuries in 18 of them, about 39% of the analyzed sample. The injuries varied between linear fractures of the skull bones and signs of blows from sharp instruments, including a penetrating wound on one side of the head and a cut injury near the eye, injuries indicating some occurred close to the time of death. These findings revive old questions raised by British archaeologist Flinders Petrie over 100 years ago. Campbell believes that advances in forensic techniques have allowed reinterpretation of some marks. However, the study does not provide conclusive evidence that all owners of the injured skulls were deliberately killed, nor does it prove they were buried alive. The findings contradict the traditional depiction of victims being killed by a blow from a stone mace, as most fractures were linear rather than depressed. The results remain limited due to sample size.
