"Meta" apologizes for suspending the "No to Kings" account opposing Trump

Meta acknowledged that an automated security system mistakenly suspended the "No to Kings Alliance" anti-Trump account on Instagram after detecting intensive activity linked to the "Claude" AI tool during widespread protests in the United States. The company apologized for the incident.

Meta announced that an automated security system mistakenly suspended the account of the "No to Kings Alliance," which opposes US President Donald Trump, on the Instagram platform during widespread protests in the United States on Saturday. The company explained that unusual activity by the "Claude" AI tool, owned by Anthropic, triggered the automated protection systems, leading to the account suspension. Meta's Vice President of Communications, Andy Stone, apologized for the incident, stating that an investigation by Instagram's engineering team revealed that intensive data-reading activity linked to the "Claude" tool activated the protection systems. According to Stone, the tool accessed profiles, posts, and tags at a rate about four times higher than normal activity, through a series of consecutive and intensive requests over a short period on Saturday. He noted that the nature of these requests caused the protection systems to treat them as activity from automated software, resulting in the account being mistakenly suspended. He added that an automated review conducted about an hour after the suspension concluded that the account should not have been disabled, so it was reactivated, though restoring administrative permissions took longer. Stone reiterated the company's apology, affirming that the account suspension was a mistaken action.
