Former hostage Liri Albag visited the grave of her friend, observation soldier Cpl. Shirat Yam Amar, who pushed away a grenade in the guard post at Nahal Oz and saved her life. A year after returning from Hamas captivity, Albag gathered the courage to visit the grave. In a post she described, she wrote: "There is something so painful about standing before your grave and knowing that I am here, alive, and you are not." Albag said it took her months to muster the mental strength, and that every day she discovers new things about her friend. She quoted Amar's brother, who said "you were afraid of nothing," and added: "In all the chaos, in the fear of all of us, you were brave in a way that is hard to explain in words." The two arrived at the Nahal Oz base two days before the massacre and stayed for the weekend, and did not have time to get to know each other deeply. Albag ended with thanks: "Thank you, Yami, for your courage, for who you were, and for the fact that because of you I am here."
