Life imprisonment for Muhammad Abu Ubaid for murdering Rafa Harsha by burning in Meiser

The Haifa District Court sentenced Muhammad Abu Ubaid to life imprisonment after convicting him of murdering Rafa Harsha by burning inside his home in the village of Meiser in 2022. The court also ordered him to pay compensation of 258,000 shekels to the victim's son, the maximum compensation set in this case. The ruling came in response to the prosecution's request, represented by attorney Yossi Gimpel from the Haifa District Attorney's Office, to impose life imprisonment and maximum compensation, stating there were no circumstances justifying a reduced sentence. According to the facts accepted by the court, Abu Ubaid planned to kill Harsha over a dispute between them, and equipped himself in advance with a flammable substance and a lighter, before entering his home, pouring the substance on his body while he was asleep in his bed, then setting him on fire and fleeing the scene. Harsha managed to get out of the house, while his sons rushed to extinguish the flames. He was later transferred for treatment at the hospital, where he stayed for about two months before dying from complications of the burns he sustained. During the trial, the court rejected the defense's claims regarding the lack of a causal link between Abu Ubaid's actions and Harsha's death, affirming that the death resulted from complications of the burns he caused. It also concluded that the crime was carried out with premeditation and was particularly brutal. The court rejected the defense's request for a reduced sentence, noting no circumstances were proven that would reduce Abu Ubaid's responsibility for the crime, and unanimously decided to impose life imprisonment and order him to pay compensation.
