Lapid to Attorney General: Freeze the ambassador appointments planned by Sa'ar

Opposition leader MK Yair Lapid turned today (Thursday) to Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, demanding a freeze on Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar's plan to complete the appointments of 12 new ambassadors, which was revealed yesterday on ynet. The appeal, submitted through attorney Oded Gazit, is based on the directive requiring ministers in a transitional government to exercise restraint in exercising their powers. Lapid argues that this is "a move by a minister, five weeks before elections, intended to tie the hands of the next foreign minister and the professional service of the Foreign Ministry." The appeal noted that most candidates are only set to take up their posts in the summer of 2027, and one even in 2028. Lapid requests the urgent position of the Attorney General before the Appointments Committee completes its work. The Foreign Ministry responded that there is importance in completing the appointments as early as possible to allow diplomats to prepare, and that procedures have continued as usual in all previous election campaigns.
