According to the report, Vance contacted an intermediary in the Democratic campaign and asked to connect with Jake Sullivan, who was Clinton's senior policy adviser. Vance told the intermediary: "I hate Hillary. But I hate Trump more." He argued that Clinton should visit the swing states of Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin, and apologize for her support of the Iraq War. A direct phone call between Vance and Sullivan took place six weeks before the election, during which Vance urged Clinton to "fix" her "basket of deplorables" remark. Vice President Vance's spokesperson, Taylor Van Kirk, responded: "We 100 percent reject the characterization that he tried to help Hillary win."
