The droplets remain airborne for about 20 seconds and can spread bacteria and viruses to nearby surfaces, including toothbrushes and handles. Researcher Lira Adiani from Flinders University in Australia explained that the fact that the particles were detected at breathing height indicates a real pathway for inhalation exposure. A direct link was found between the concentration of microorganisms in the toilet and the amount of particles released, as well as between water pressure and the extent of dispersion. Closing the lid does not completely prevent dispersion, but directs the droplets sideways and downward instead of vertically.
