High Court against Karhi: Corporation CEO's term temporarily extended
The Supreme Court unanimously accepted petitions against Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, ordering him to adopt the search committee's recommendations for appointing four members to the public broadcasting corporation's board. Additionally, CEO Golan Yochpaz's term was temporarily extended for up to 60 days from the board's convening date, to prevent paralysis of the corporation.
The Supreme Court unanimously accepted petitions filed by the "Hatzlacha" organization and other petitioners against Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, ruling that he must adopt the search committee's recommendations for appointing four candidates to the board of the public broadcasting corporation. The judges rejected the minister's claims of procedural flaws, determining that the candidates meet eligibility requirements. The minister was ordered to sign the appointment letters within a week; if he fails to do so, the appointments will take effect by virtue of the ruling. Concurrently, the High Court temporarily extended CEO Golan Yochpaz's term, which was set to expire in November 2026, for up to 60 days from the date the board can convene and decide on the next CEO. The extension aims to prevent paralysis of the corporation, as the board lacks a quorum due to members' term expirations. The decision was made under Section 18 of the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation Law.
