Despite his social difficulties, Crooks was a gifted student who scored 1500 on the SAT, and his role model was Iron Man. He ordered gun parts from Amazon under the pseudonym "Bob Dole," believing this would protect his bank accounts. He also created a plastic Glock 19 pistol, but his father forbade him from using it. Crooks began shooting practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, initially as a poor marksman, but after training improved and hit targets from over 91 meters away.
