German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking on the third anniversary of the October 7 attack, affirmed Germany's unwavering support for Israel's security and existence, calling it a lesson of the Shoah and part of German identity. He pledged efforts to prevent a repeat of the crime and to combat antisemitism, while also advocating for a two-state solution.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking on the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, declared that Germany stands "firmly at Israel's side." In a statement, Merz framed Germany's support for Israel's security and existence as "a lesson of the Shoah and part of German identity." He assured Israeli friends that Germany would work to ensure "such a crime is never repeated" and would oppose those who "relativize or even question Israel's right to exist." Merz also stressed Germany's commitment to laying foundations for a "new order" where Israelis, Palestinians, and neighbors can live in peace, advocating for a Palestinian state alongside Israel. He acknowledged rising antisemitism in Germany and promised to combat it consistently. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner had the Brandenburg Gate lit with the Israeli flag to mark the anniversary. Israeli Ambassador to Germany Ron Prosor called this "an important gesture to all Jews who must hide their identity every day on Berlin's streets," adding that "true friendship is only revealed in difficult times."
