He collaborated with many stars, including Carol Burnett, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, and Bette Midler. His professional breakthrough began in the 1960s, first as an illustrator and then as an independent designer. He gained widespread recognition for his work on The Carol Burnett Show. His most famous collaboration was with Cher, beginning in 1971 on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. His designs for her, featuring sequins, feathers, and daring skin exposure, became the hallmark of both. One of the most memorable outfits was the dress she wore at the 1986 Oscars, with a huge feathered headpiece. Mackie won nine Emmy Awards out of 32 nominations, a Tony Award for costume design for the musical The Cher Show in 2018, and was nominated for three Oscars.
