Disturbing testimonies in the UK: Antisemitism within the healthcare system

A new documentary titled "Malignant: Antisemitism in the NHS," produced by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), presents a series of troubling testimonies from Jewish patients and staff in the UK's National Health Service (NHS). The testimonies describe harassment, threats, and antisemitic expressions since the October 7, 2023 attack and the war in Gaza. Among the cases: a Jewish nurse exposed to a Nazi salute from a colleague; a senior medical professor who received antisemitic death threats; an emergency services worker physically attacked by a colleague; and a patient who discovered that one of the doctors treating him was the leader of an Islamist organization banned in the UK as a terrorist group. A particularly difficult testimony describes a Jewish patient who, during surgery while vulnerable and dependent on the doctor, had antisemitic remarks directed at him. Alongside the film, the CAA published a survey of 4,490 Jews in the UK, showing that 65.1% are concerned about receiving unequal treatment due to their Judaism, and more than 4 out of 10 have taken steps to hide their identity. The organization claims this is a systemic problem. The official report by Lord John Mann, the government's independent advisor, determined that there are failures reminiscent of institutional discrimination, and that 13% of Jewish workers reported discrimination from managers or colleagues. The British government accepted the recommendations and announced measures to strengthen accountability and mandatory training.
