Catastrophe in Nepal due to natural disaster – details of the emergency (VIDEO)
In Nepal, in the mountainous Gorkha district, flooding on the Budhi Gandaki River has destroyed dozens of homes and bridges. Search and rescue teams report ten people missing. The disaster was caused by a landslide that blocked a tributary of the river. Army units and police have been deployed to deal with the aftermath.
Early on Sunday, October 11, the mountainous Gorkha district in Nepal faced a devastating natural disaster. A raging water flow on the Budhi Gandaki River instantly wiped out dozens of residential buildings and vital bridges. According to preliminary data, at least thirty-five houses were swept away in the settlements of Painyu and Bagar. Serious damage was also inflicted on the infrastructure of the villages of Jagat, Salleri, Dovan, and Ghattekhola. Currently, six bridges are known to have been completely destroyed, including an important crossing on the border of the Gorkha and Dhading districts. The number of missing local residents has reached ten. The construction camp of the hydropower company Times Energy was also hit by the disaster. Several company buildings were completely destroyed by the powerful flow. Tragedy was averted thanks to vigilant local residents who warned workers of the impending danger in time. All eighteen employees managed to evacuate to a safe high ground in advance. Rescue agencies have launched a large-scale search and evacuation operation. Army units and police have been deployed to deal with the consequences of the emergency. The first affected citizens have already been airlifted by helicopter from the water-cut-off Jagat area. Experts consider a massive landslide near the settlement of Chumcheta to be the main cause of the sudden cataclysm. According to preliminary data from hydrologists, the mountain mass blocked one of the river's tributaries, forming a natural dam. The accumulated water eventually breached the barrier and rushed down the riverbed like an avalanche. The threat of new flooding also persists for downstream regions along the Budhi Gandaki and Trishuli rivers. Emergency services are urging the population of coastal zones to urgently evacuate to higher ground, warning residents of Mugling, Chitwan, and Nawalparasi of the danger. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that Nepal has still not recovered from the terrible tragedy of late summer. The devastating flood on August 26, caused by a glacial lake outburst on the border with China, claimed 1,457 lives and left thousands of local residents homeless.
