Arab League welcomes call for release of Barghouti
The Arab League welcomed a call by US Congressman Ro Khanna to release prisoner Marwan Barghouti, considering it aligns with the steadfast Arab position on the prisoner issue. The League affirmed that releasing Barghouti and all Palestinian and Arab prisoners is a non-negotiable political and humanitarian demand, and called on the international community to pressure for their release and to end occupation policies.
The Arab League welcomed a call by US Congressman Ro Khanna to release prisoner and leader Marwan Barghouti. This came in a statement by the League on Sunday, in which it affirmed that the call aligns with the steadfast Arab position on the prisoner issue, as a central issue in joint Arab action. The League stressed that releasing Barghouti and all Palestinian and Arab prisoners in occupation prisons represents a standalone political and humanitarian demand that is not open to compromise or conditional on the narratives of the detaining party. It noted that Barghouti is a political prisoner who has been subjected to repeated violations for years, pointing out that it has previously called for an end to these violations, providing him with an independent medical visit, and opening an international investigation into the attacks he suffered, in addition to demanding his release. The League linked the prisoner issue to any serious path towards a just and comprehensive peace, affirming that it cannot be achieved without enabling the Palestinian people to determine their destiny, based on international legitimacy resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative, and the two-state solution on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. It called on the international community to translate this trend into practical positions that pressure for the release of prisoners, foremost among them Marwan Barghouti, and to end policies of arrest, torture, and settlement, and to create conditions for a credible political process. US Congressman Ro Khanna had recently called, in a video he posted on platform X, for Israel to release prisoner Marwan Barghouti.
