Aoun and Araghchi affirm necessity of diplomatic solutions to end regional conflicts
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed regional developments in a phone call and affirmed the need to support diplomatic solutions to stop Israeli attacks and conflicts. The call comes against the backdrop of a diplomatic crisis between Beirut and Tehran after Lebanon withdrew its approval of the designated Iranian ambassador Mohammad Reza Sheibani, accusing him of interfering in internal affairs.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed regional developments in a phone call on Wednesday and affirmed the need to support diplomatic solutions to end conflicts and Israeli attacks. The Lebanese presidency stated that Aoun received a call from Araghchi during which they discussed the current situation in light of recent developments, and both sides agreed on the necessity of supporting diplomatic solutions as the best way to end conflicts. The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that Araghchi emphasized the need to stop Israeli attacks on Lebanon. The call comes amid a diplomatic crisis between Beirut and Tehran, following the Lebanese Foreign Ministry's decision on March 24 to withdraw approval of the designated Iranian ambassador Mohammad Reza Sheibani and declare him persona non grata. Lebanese authorities justified the decision by accusing the Iranian diplomat of interfering in internal affairs, while Tehran refused to comply and affirmed the ambassador would continue his duties. The decision sparked internal discord in Lebanon, with Hezbollah and the Amal Movement opposing it, while the government maintained its position. Despite the crisis, Sheibani remained in Lebanon and obtained a six-month residency in August as a civilian resident.
