Unbelievable: Enlisted in the IDF - in the service of the terrorist organization that kidnapped the Bibas family

An Israeli citizen, Shahada Abu al-Qiyan, was sent by the terrorist organization "Kata'ib al-Mujahideen" operating in the Gaza Strip to enlist in the IDF. He was arrested days after his enlistment by the Shin Bet and sentenced to 24.5 years in prison and a fine of 25,000 shekels. The Be'er Sheva District Court ruled that this is an unprecedented case of planting a terrorist agent in the military.

The Be'er Sheva District Court sentenced Shahada Abu al-Qiyan, an Israeli citizen who enlisted in the IDF on behalf of the terrorist organization "Kata'ib al-Mujahideen" operating in the Gaza Strip, to 24.5 years in prison and a fine of 25,000 shekels. Abu al-Qiyan was arrested by the Shin Bet days after his enlistment, before he could carry out any action. Judges Daniel Ben Tolila, Tal Lahiani Shoham, and Yoav Atar noted that they found no similar case where the very enlistment in the IDF constituted part of activity in a terrorist organization, unlike cases where a soldier who had already enlisted passed information to hostile elements. They emphasized that this is someone who was planted from the outset to harm the security of the state and its citizens, and that this is a fifth column within the military. The verdict refers to the ongoing security threats to Israel, while mentioning the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, even though Abu al-Qiyan's actions were stopped before the outbreak of the Iron Swords War.
